Certified Water Safety Instructor Sally Juilfs is leading the lessons with the help of local lifeguards. More than 150 students are participating in Red Cross lessons this summer, ranging in age from 3 to 37. Juilfs says it’s important that kids and adults know how to swim and know how to save themselves and others if the need arises. Students learn how to float, perform survival strokes, dive, use rescue tubes and rings, and even make floatation devices from their clothes. All students are taught basic First Aid and CPR skills. Juilfs says an important facet of the lessons is letting the younger children get time in the water. She said they need to get over their fear of the water and enjoy swimming in order to learn how to be safe. The daily lessons began June 23rd and continue through July 4th. The cost of the lessons is only $10 per student. Juilfs says the local United Way has been very generous with donations to the program to keep costs down. http://www.kncycountry.com/news/trackback.php?id=20080703045259123 Cass County Carjacking http://www.kncycountry.com/news/article.php?story=2008070304440935 http://www.kncycountry.com/news/article.php?story=2008070304440935 Thu, 03 Jul 2008 04:44:09 -0500 http://www.kncycountry.com/news/article.php?story=2008070304440935#comments Local News A carjacking occurred in dowtown Plattsmouth during the noon hour Tuesday. Drewes had entered a "no contest" plea to Motor Vehicle Homicide in Cass County District Court in March and was found guilty of the charge. Drewes was also given one year for Driving Under the Influence, 3rd Offense and had his driver’s license suspended for 15 years. Judge Randall Rehmeier followed terms of the plea arrangement, and the DUI sentence was ordered to be served concurrently with the MVH conviction. Five years was the maximum sentence for MVH, a Class IIIA Felony. Drewes was the driver of a pickup that collided head-on with an ATV operated by 57-year-old Leroy Vogt of Elmwood on a rural Cass County road (vicinity of 274th Street and Havelock Avenue) in August 2006. According to previous court proceedings, a witness had observed the Drewes pickup racing abreast with another pickup cresting hills before the collision. Accident reconstruction and investigation showed Drewes was left of center on the rock road and there was a cloud of dust as the Drewes pickup trailed the other vehicle when it struck the ATV. Drewes' breath alcohol content was .089, said Sunde. Vogt died at the scene. Sunde detailed Drewes’ previous convictions over the last nine years that included eight other driving-related offenses in addition to the two DUI’s, a theft conviction and a resisting arrest conviction. Probation had been revoked twice. Sunde said Drewes’ "wanton disregard for the safety of others" coupled with his previous record called for the maximum sentence. Drewes’ attorney, Patrick Betterman, argued for probation. He termed the crash "a non-intentional reckless act." Betterman said Drewes has been so depressed he tried to commit suicide three times. Drewes spoke to the court and said his "heart goes out to the Vogt family." He said he thinks about his actions every minute of every day. He admitted he had continued his drinking recently because that was his way of dealing with his depression. In handing down the sentence, Rehmeier said Drewes’s past criminal history and his concern about Drewes being a danger to himself ruled out probation. http://www.kncycountry.com/news/trackback.php?id=20080702054240843
