Forms are being installed on the bridge deck’s east spans. The new concrete deck is expected to be poured this month or next. Also being done is removing the old concrete deck on the truss and the west approach, along with completing steel repairs below the bridge deck from under the bridge. MoDOT shows completing northside construction in July then switching traffic to the south side. The Iowa State Patrol reported this occurred early Saturday morning, about a quarter after 1 a.m. on “T” Avenue. Troopers say a two-ton pickup was southbound, going around a curve when the right side tires of the pickup went off the pavement. The driver lost control, the truck struck an embankment, the truck then went airborne and rolled onto its side. The driver was partially ejected out the drivers side window and pinned underneath the pickup. Killed was 35-year-old Jeffrey Barr of Clarinda. Three passengers, all from Clarinda, were injured and taken to the Clarinda hospital. And the President of Southeast Community College is remaining mum about the weekend gathering. The follows the lawsuit filed by Metropolitan Community College of Omaha against the state’s five other two-year schools. A trial is set to begin March 15th. Metro alleged it lost about $11 million dollars in state finds due to misrepresentations by the other schools and miscalculations by the state. As for the Saturday-Sunday gathering in Nebraska City, there was no advance notice from any of the six juco’s. Among the other participants was State Senator Greg Adams of York, who chairs the Legislature’s Education Committee. From a news release, Adams said board of trustees members and school Presidents were present for the two-day meeting. The senator said following 13 hours of meetings, quoting Adams’ news release, “I'm confident that this desire to find resolution will make solving this dispute possible. There's more work to be done, but what we accomplished this weekend, makes me believe there will be a legislative solution in the future.&quot; KNCY News asked the President of Southeast Community College for further information. The reply from SCC President Dr. Jack Huck stated all questions are being channeled through Senator Adams. Final action is expected on the update to add restrictions on electronic message boards among other things. Monday night’s council agenda also includes awarding a bid for a new street department building to Amerine Builders, which had the low bid of $201,634. Construction behind existing buildings, where land was leveled last year, is to start on or before June 1st and take up to 90 days to complete. Final action on changing the city’s fee schedule...four pages of fees...is expected. And the council has been asked to send bills to property owners at seven locations where city employees or private contractors cleaned up and cleared out. The total amounts to $2,220. City Administrator Pat Haverty tells KNCY News their preliminary conversations with Nebraska’s emergency management agency indicated that they would pay for expenses above what the city had budgeted. State officials will open bids March 18th on widening South 11th and straightening out 11th Corso. Construction on both is supposed to start May 3rd. Widening 11th Corso is supposed to take no more than 80 days...or towards the end of July. Realigning 11th Corso so it crosses South 11th without a jog is supposed to take less time...45 days...or towards the end of June. Superintendent Jeff Edwards, visiting with Patrick on the KNCY Country Morning Show, says the new Northside gym floor is nearly ready for daily use...almost two months after classes began. Outside the new Northside, concrete drives and sidewalks are already cracking. At the high school, Dr. Edwards said there’s some progress despite winter weather. And nearly seven months after the delayed opening of the expanded Hayward Elementary, work continues there. A vacant downtown building will come to life this coming weekend as volunteers package 60,000 meals. This week, 40,000 pounds of materials will be trucked to Auburn. This coming Friday and Saturday, volunteers will package and box the food. Nemaha County District Court records indicate 18 year Donte Severs and 29 year old Andrew Spiehs will go on trial April 14th. Severs is charged with conspiracy to commit a felony. Spiehs, named by an informant as one of the plot conspirators, is accused of stealing several guns. Documents say Spiehs agreed to wear a wire and talk to Severs about the plot. As the filing deadline for many Nebraska political offices winds down comes a second filing for one of two openings on the Syracuse City Council. Kristy Henke filed Friday afternoon. As of Monday morning only the incumbents or one candidate have filed for the Nebraska City City Council and 10 of 13 Otoe County offices. For three openings on the Palmyra-Bennet school board there are five candidates. For three openings on the Syracuse area school board there are four candidates. For four openings on the Nebraska City school board one incumbent is among the five who have filed. Add a second candidate for Auburn Mayor. The Nemaha County Clerk’s office reported Dan Snyder filed Friday, joining Scott Kudrna, who filed earlier. Incumbent Bob Engles chose not to run for re-election. Two other council incumbents also decided to retire, Annie Thomas and Bill Snyder.
