MOVE WOULD INCREASE POWER PRODUCTION BY 146 MEGAWATTS

NATE GONNER-12/19/2012

THE COOPER NUCLEAR STATION IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO INCREASING POWER PRODUCTION AT THEIR FACILITY IN BROWNVILLE IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

THE NEBRASKA PUBLIC POWER DISTICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS UNAMIOUSLY VOTED FRIDAY TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF POWER PRODUCED AT THE STATION.

NPPD WILL SEEK TO INCREASE THE PLANT'S OUTPUT BY 146 MEGAWATTS FROM ITS CURRENT 800 MEGAWATT NAMEPLATE, THROUGH AN EXTENDED POWER UPRATE. THE INCREASE IN GENERATION WILL REQUIRE NO ADDITIONAL FACILITIES OR EMPLOYEES.

NPPD MEDIA SPECIALIST MARK BECKER SAYS THE COMPANY IS EXPECTING AN INCREASE IN ELECTRICAL DEMAND THROUGH 2018 WHICH WOULD HELP WITH THAT.

HE ALSO SAYS IT OPENS UP FOR NPPD TO HELP GENERATE POWER FOR A REGIONAL MARKET AS WELL.

NPPD WILL SEEK THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISION'S APPROVAL FOR A LICENSE AMENDMENT AND APPROVAL FROM THE NEBRASKA POWER REVIEW BOARD BEFORE THE INCREASED PRODUCTION CAN TAKE PLACE.
