ONE OF NINE PROPSALS LATENBAUGH WANTS TO INTRODUCE IN 2014

By Nate Gonner 10/16/2013

THE SUPERINTENDENT OF NEBRASKA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS A LITTLE LEERY ABOUT OMAHA STATE SENATOR SCOTT LATENBAUGH’S PROPOSAL TO HOLD BACK THIRD GRADE STUDENTS IF THEY DON’T MEET A CERTAIN READING REQUIREMENT.

LATENBAUGH RECENTLY INTRODUCED HIS SOCIAL PROMOTION PROPOSAL, WHICH IS SIMILAR TO A LAW PASSED LAST YEAR IN IOWA , AND WOULD MAKE SURE THIRD GRADERS CAN READ BEFORE ADVANCING TO THE FORTH GRADE.

NEBRASKA CITY SUPERINTENDENT JEFF EDWARDS SAYS INSTITUTING THE SOCIAL PROMOTION PROPSAL TO ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE STATE WOULD BE A SLIPPERY SLOPE BECAUSE YOU HAVE STUDENTS AT ALL DIFFERNET ACADEMIC LEVELS.

EDWARDS SAYS THE FIRST QUESTION HE HAD WHEN HE HEARD OF THE PROPOSAL WAS HOW STATE EDUCATORS ARE GOING TO ASSESS THIS AND WHO IS GOING TO DETERMINE WHAT REQUIREMENTS ARE NEEDED TO MEET READING REQUIREMENTS.

THE SOCIAL PROMOTION BAN IS ONE OF NINE EDUCATION PROPOSALS THAT SENATOR LATENBAUGH PLANS TO PROPOSE DURING THE 2014 LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
