PUBLIC POWER DISTRICTS WOULD OFFER INTERNET SERVICE UNDER BILL

NEBRASKA CITY AND AUBURN ARE JOINING FORCES TO PUT TOGETHER LEGISLATION THAT SUPPORTS FIBER OPTICS THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

NEBRASKA CITY CITY ADMINISTRATOR JOE JOHNSON IS WORKING WITH AUBURN MAYOUR SCOTT KUDNA AND NEBRASKA CITY MAYOR ON POSSIBLE LEGISLATION GIVING PUBLIC POWER BUSINESSES THE OPTION TO USE TOWNS FIBER CABLE TO PROVIDE TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICES SUCH AS INTERNET, PHONE, AND VIDEO.

UNDER THE LEGISLATION, THE PUBLIC POWER BUSINESSES WOULD HAVE TO OFFER NO LESS THAN A GIGABITE OF DATA.

JOHNSON SAYS WHY HE DECIDED TO USE THE PUBLIC POWER INDUSTYS IS THEY ALREADY HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO PERFORM THIS.

HE ALSO SAYS IT WOULD HELP OUT THE SMALL OUTLINING COMMUNITIES AS WELL.

"PUBLIC POWER DISTRICT THEY SERVE RURAL NEBRASKA. THEY HAVE THERE POLLS AND LINES GOING INTO RURAL AREAS THAT MIGHT NOT HAVE APPROPRIATE INTERNET VOLUMES THAT THEY CAN ACCESS." JOHNSON SAID "THIS IS REALLY SERVING THEIR INTERESTS BY EXTENDING THIS FIBER OPTIC TECHNOLOGY INTO RURAL AREAS OF THE STATE OF NEBRASKA."

MAYOR KUDNA SAYS IF THE LEGISLATURE WERE TO PASS THIS IT WOULD MAKE SMALL COMMUNITIES SUCH AS AUBURN MORE COMPETITIVE IN BRINGING IN NEW BUSINESSES TO TOWN.

"WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO RECRUIT COMPANIES TO COME HERE THATS A HUGE SELLING FACTOR." KUDNA SAID " LISTEN YOU ARE COMING FROM A LARGE METROPOLATIN AREAON ONE OF THE COASTS THAT HAVE THIS SERVICE. WE HAVE IT NOW, AND WE ARE ABLE OFFER IT AS A COST THAT IS VERY COMPETITIVE AS WELL."

JOHNSON SAYS THE LEGISLATION IS IN THE EARLY STAGES AND IS HOPING TO HAVE AN OFFICIAL BILL READY TO BE POSSIBLY PRESENTED AT THE NEXT STATE LEGISLATIVE SESSION COMING UP IN JANUARY.
