By Nate Gonner 8/21/2013

A POPULAR TEENAGE FAD FROM THE LATE 1950’S ACTUALLY WAS CREATED RIGHT HERE IN THE KNCY LISTENING AREA.

IN 1958, RICHARD KNERR AND ARTHUR MELIN CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF THE HULA HOOP AFTER SEEING SCHOOL CHIDREN IN AUSTRILA USING BAMBOO HOOPS FOR ENTERTAINMENT.

KNERR AND MELIN CONTACTED CROWNLINE PLASTICS, WHICH MOVED TO NEBRASKA CITY IN THE MID 1960’S, TO HELP PRODUCE THE VERY FIRST HULA HOOPS IN THE UNITED STATES WHILE THE PLANT WAS HOUSED IN HAMBURG.

CROWNLINE PLASTIC’S PROJECT MANAGER MARK DALEN SAYS THE HULA HOOP IS STARTING TO MAKE A COMEBACK.

              DALEN AUDIO:

DALEN SAYS CROWNLINE CONTINUED TO HELP PRODUCE THE HULA HOOP WHEN THEY MOVED THEIR PLANT TO NEBRASKA CITY IN THE MID 1960’S.

ALTHOUGH THEY DON’T PRODUCE THE HULA HOOP ANYMORE, DALEN SAYS CROWNLINE PLASTICS IS STILL IN THE PLASTIC PIPE BUSINESS.

TODAY THE COMPANY MAKES TUBING FOR IRRAGATION FOR FARMERS AND FOR PLUMBING PURPOSES AND ITS ALL AMERICAN MADE IN NEBRASKA CITY.
