By Nate Gonner 8/21/2013

FARMERS OF NEMAHA COUNTY ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND A FIELD DAY NEXT WEEK FOCUSING ON A SMALL PLANT-PARASITIC THAT ATTACKS THE ROOTS OF SOYBEANS.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA LINCOLN EXTENSION OFFICE IN NEMAHA COUNTY ALONG WITH THE NEBRASKA SOYBEAN BOARD ARE HOLDING A FREE SOYBEAN CYST NEMATODE MANAGEMENT FIELD DAY NEXT TUESDAY IN PERU.

NEMAHA COUNTY UNL EXTENSION EDUCATOR GARY LESONING SAYS SOYBEAN CYST NEMATODE ATTACKS THE ROOTS OF SOYBEANS, TAKING NURIENTS AWAY FROM THE CROP AND CAUSING MILLIONS IN LOST YIELDS TO NEBRASKA FARMERS.

              LESOING AUDIO:

LESOING SAYS FARMERS WITH SOYBEANS THAT HAVE A YELLOWISH COLOR OR ARE STUNTED IN GROWTH MORE THAN LIKELY HAVE THE NEMATODE IN THEIR FIELDS, WHICH CAN CAUSE YIELD LOSS UP TO 30%.

HE SAYS PEOPLE CAN LEARN MORE HOW TO TREAT THE NEMATODE TUESDAY AT LOU BECCARD’S FARM IN PERU.

FOR MORE INFROMATION ON THE SOYBEAN CYST NEMATODE MANAGEMENT FIELD DAY, CONTACT THE NEMAHA COUNL EXTENSION OFFICE AT (402) 274-4755.
