COMMITTEE DOWN TO TWO POTENTIAL LOCATIONS

By Nate Gonner 6/27/2013

NEBRASKA CITY POOL COMMITTEE MEMBERS WERE JOINED BY SEVERAL CITY OFFICIALS AND INTERESTED CITIZENS IN DISCUSSING THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE IN REGARDS TO THE CITY'S FUTURE POOL.

THE SPLASH COMMITTEE DISCUSSED AT LENGTH WEDNESDAY NIGHT THE LOCATION OF NEBRASKA CITY'S FUTURE POOL.

SEVERAL OPTIONS WERE THROWN OUT BUT ULTIMATELY IT CAME DOWN TO TWO LOCATIONS: KEEPING IT INSIDE STEINHART PARK AT ITS CURRENT LOCATION OR MOVING IT TO THE OPEN SPACE ON THE WEST SIDE OF CENTRAL AVENUE.

DATA FROM A RECENT SPLASH COMMITTEE SURVEY SHOWED 54 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WERE IN FAVOR OF THE CENTRAL AVENUE LOCATION, WHILE THE COMMITTEE HAS RECIEVED 27 PETITIONS AS OF WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN OPPOSITION OF PUTTING THE POOL ON CENTRAL AVENUE.

SPLASH COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN TIM STEWART SAYS MOST OF THE PETITIONS WERE FROM NEIGHBORS WHO DIDN'T WANT A POOL LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM THEIR HOMES.

CONCERNS DISCUSSED REGARDING KEEPING THE POOL IN ITS CURRENT LOCATION WOULD BE THE TOWN POTENTIALLY BEING WITHOUT A POOL FOR TWO SWIM SEASONS, WHICH WOULD AFFECT NEBRASKA CITY'S SWIM TEAM.

THE COMMITTEE DECIDED TO STUDY BOTH AREAS AND SEE WHAT AMENITIES EACH LOCATION COULD POTENTIALLY HOLD BEFORE MAKING THEIR NEXT MOVE ON A FINALIZED LOCATION.
