THREATENS FILLIBUSTER IF LB-266 DOESN'T GET TO LEGISLATIVE FLOOR

By Nate Gonner 3/20/2013

AN OMAHA SENATOR IS THREATING TO CONTINUE TO FILLIBUSTER OTHER LEGISLATIVE BILLS UNLESS ONE OF HIS BILL THAT WOULD IMPACT NEBRASKA CITY IS PUSHED TO THE FLOOR OF THE LEGISLATURE.

SENATOR ERINE CHAMBER’S BILL LB-266 HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT A LOT IN LINCOLN, AND WOULD REPEAL THE INTIATIVE LB-357, A SALE TAX INTIATIVE THAT ALLOWS NEBRASKA TOWNS TO INCREASE LOCAL SALE TAXES BY HALF A PERCENT.

THE STIPULATION IS THAT THE MONEY NEEDS TO BE USED SPECIFICALLY FOR PUBLIC INFASTRUCTURE PROJECTS ONLY.

CHAMBERS USED HIS PRIORITY BILL ON LB-543, A MEASURE THAT WOULD CHANGE A PERSONS SENTENCE FROM THE DEATH PENALTY TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT A CHANCE OF PAROLE.

NEBRASKA CITY’S CITY ADMINISTRATOR JOE JOHNSON HAS BEEN WATCHING THE MEASURE CLOSELY AND HAS BEEN IN OPPOSITION OF THE BILL SINCE ITS INCEPTION.

HE FEELS DESPITE CHAMBERS THREATS, HE DOESN’T SEE THE BILL GETTING TO THE FLOOR BECAUSE HE IS NOT MAKING MANY FRIENDS WITH HIS COLLEAGUES.

NEBRASKA CITY TRIED TO GET AN LB-357 TAX INTIATIVE PASSED THIS PAST ELECTION IN NOVEMBER.

THE CITY WAS HOPING TO USE THE EXTRA SALES TAX MONEY FOR A NEW POOL AND TO DEPLOY FIBER OPTICS IN TOWN.

THE MEASURE FAILED WITH 55% OF VOTERS VOTING DOWN THE MEASURE.
