CITY FOUNDERS INCLUDING J STERLING MORTON WERE PRO SLAVERY

             THE MANAGER OF THE MAYHEW CABIN AND JOHN BROWNS CAVE SAYS NEBRASKA CITY WAS DIVIDED ON THE ISSUE OF SLAVERY BEFORE THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION PROHIBITED IT FROM HAPPENING.

           IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH, THE MAYHEW CABIN AND JOHN BROWNS CAVE IS CO-SPONSORING TWO BLACK HISTORY PROGRAMS THIS WEEK.

          BILL HAYES IS THE MANAGER OF THE MAYHEW CABIN AND JOHN BROWNS CAVE IN TOWN, AND HE SAYS SOME OF NEBRASKA CITY’S FOUNDING FATHERS WERE IN FACT SLAVE OWNERS INCLUDING STEVEN NUCKOLLS.

          HAYES ADDED EVEN THE FOUNDER OF ARBOR DAY J STERLING MORTON WAS PRO SLAVERY, ALTHOUGH THEIR ISN’T DOCUMENTATION OF MORTON EVER OWNING SLAVES.

         THE MAYHEW CABIN ALONG WITH PERU STATE COLLEGE WILL CO-SPONSOR A PROGRAM TOMORROW MORNING AT 11 O CLOCK ON THE HISTORY OF THE GREAT PLAINS BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM FROM CHAIRMAN JAMES BEATTY.

        THEY WILL ALSO WILL CO-SPONSOR A PROGRAM THIS WEEKEND WITH THE CIVIL WAR MUSEUM TO BRING IN JOHN HARRIS, WHO WILL TALK ABOUT THE LIFE OF FREDERICK DOUGLAS AND HIS IMPACT DURING THE CIVIL WAR FROM A FIRST PERSON PERSPECTIVE.

       THAT PROGRAM WILL TAKE PLACE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT 2 O CLOCK OUT AT THE CIVIL WAR MUSEUM.
