By Nate Gonner 1/15/2013

THE TOPIC OF OBESITY HAS BEEN A HOT ONE ACROSS THE NATION FOR YEARS, AND NEXT WEEK IN AUBURN THERE IS TO BE AN INFORMATIVE EVENT THAT HOPEFULLY WILL FIND NEW WAYS TO DECREASE THE EPIDEMIC.

PERU STATE PROFESSOR DR KYLE RYAN WILL BE SHOWING THE DOCUMETARY "THE WEIGHT OF THE NATION" ON MONDAY, JANUARY 21, ALONG WITH HOLDING A DISCUSSION WITH A PANEL OF EXPERTS IN CHILD OBESITY TO FIND NEW WAYS TO DECREASE THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN WHO ARE CONSIDERED OBESE.

NOW SOME PEOPLE MIGHT NOT THINK CHILD OBESITY IS A PROBLEM IN SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA.

RYAN SAYS CHILD OBESITY IS ACTUALLY CLIMBING AT A GREATER RATE IN RURAL AREAS COMPARED TO THEIR URBAN COUNTERPARTS.

RYAN ADDED THERE IS GREATER ACCESS TO CONVIENT STORES AND FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS IN RURAL AREAS THAN A SUPERMARKET.

SCHOOLS ARE DOING THEIR PART TO FIGHT THE EPIDEMIC BY MAKING SCHOOL LUNCHES HEALTHIER AND RESTRICTING ACCESS TO VENDING MACHINES DURING SCHOOL HOURS.

RYAN SAYS PARENTS NEED TO BE ROLE MODELS AT HOME BY ALSO EATING HEALTHIER.
